mapping data with missing data

I have an ascii file (latitude, longitude, longwave radiation)
which is on 2.5 degree grids. Some longitudes are missing. Do I
have to insert missing values (say 9999) for these missing
longitudes before I can map on a lat - lon global map or
can I map the data with out any modifications? Also does
the new version of Ferret allow mapping from North to South.
