Thanks to all who responded to my question re animations from Ferret.  It seems that there are many solutions.

For your info the dmconvert command on SGI machines works well.
Also to create animated gifs the program gifmerge works well.  I eventually found the source code at
 http://the-labs.com/GIFMerge/ and had no trouble compliing.
