Charlotte,

if you use lat and lon as variables, they get implicitly 
co-ordinates (1,2,3). 

I can overlay a track by 

can region
plot/line/over/color=red/vs lon,lat

Otherwise the co-ordinates of lat and lon are checked, they are
(1,2,3) and not in your region.
