Yes, you can do this using the  "ferret -gif" mode.  This is
documented in the on-line users guide.  Go to the index entry
"GIF image, -gif command line switch".  The users guide is at
../../documentation/ferret-documentation.html

For example,

> ferret -gif

   yes? use coads_climatology
   yes? shade/l=1 sst
   yes? frame/file=xyslice.gif    ! save the plot in the first gif file
   yes? shade/y=0 sst
   yes? frame/file=xtslice.gif    ! save the plot in a second gif file

Here's my current understanding of the batch option:

>ferret -batch < my.jnl
creates "metafile.plt" -- command "set mode metafile" does nothing/causes
crash

>ferret -batch myfile.ps < my.jnl
writes output directly to myfile.ps

Is there a way to make multiple output files?
